Christmas with a difference!

Christmas with a difference!

Can you make some room for an international student to learn what true British Festive hospitality can mean? Should you like to add that international element to your Christmas, learning another countries traditions and enjoying the connection and friendship that such sharing brings?

HOST UK arranges for international students to enjoy brief homestays with UK hosts, one day, a weekend or, over the festive period-a three day visit. We need more hosts so that a smile such as Marine’s can spread across many more faces…and across our fragile world.

If you should like to know more, please go to our website www.hostuk.org or leave us a message on

Llanelli and Agen in France have been twinned for the past 30 years, provided an important cultural exchange between the towns.

Representatives from both Llanelli and Agen’s Twinning Associations joined the LMA Evensong Service at the Parish Church. The congregation were also treated to an excellent singing performance by Christian Moulie from Agen. Merci beaucoup Christian!

The Bro Lliedi Easter Experience 2018

The recent Easter Experience within the Local Ministry Area was a huge success!

An amazing seven hundred children engaged with the event over the Easter period at St Peter’s Church and the Parish Church. Each school was allocated either a day or a session which allowed children from various schools to experience something of the last week of Jesus’ life.

The event involved six stations starting with Jesus’ triumphant entrance into Jerusalem and ending on Good Friday. At the final station all the classes came together to hear the final story about the empty tomb and the resurrection.

The children asked lots of questions about Easter, including some very good queries about why Jesus had to die. The feedback from the event was very positive with children and staff thoroughly enjoying the experience.

A big thank you for all the schools and staff that took part, and to Rev’d Rob, and Michelle Lloyd along with their hardworking team who helped make the event such a success.

Blodau Pasg – Easter Flowers

Great appreciation has been expressed to everyone who helped with the flower arranging and brass cleaning for Easter at the Parish Church and St Peter’s this year.

A huge effort was made over the weekend to help ensure that both churches looked their very best to celebrate Easter time.

Pasg Hapus! ~ Happy Easter!

Sir Edward Burne-Jones’ Easter Window

Llanelli Parish Church is very fortunate to have two Burne-Jones windows. The main window is located in the sanctuary and depicts the crucifixion of Christ. It is a stunning example of his work, and of national importance, part of the church’s significant Grade II* listed status. The window was manufactured by the famous William Morris & Co and was gifted to the church in 1909 by the Bythway family, in memory of William Bythway, a brewer in the town which was based in the Tyisha area.

Unfortunately the church has been subject to vandalism over the years, similar to many urban churches. It is hoped that sensitive external protection can be applied to the window to ensure its safety, and enjoyment for many generations to come.

The Christmas Tree and Nativity Window at Llanelli Parish Church.

Sir Arthur Cowell-Stepney was born on 26th December 1834 in Manheim and died at Yuma Arizona on 2nd July 1909. Llanelli Parish Church Features on

Songs of Praise!

The beauty and heritage of Llanelli Parish Church was captured on camera recently on the BBC’s Songs of Praise.

This was part of the programme presented by Katherine Jenkins and Josie D’arby that featured Llanelli’s Hywel Girls Choir. Choir members were interviewed in church along with the Angelicus Celtis group from Britain’s Got Talent. The choir’s leaders talked to Josie D’arby in the nave of the Parish Church, and the choir were also shown rehearsing on the chancel steps. The Choir were later featured singing Be Still My Soul at Manorbier Castle.

Captain Rob’s First Communion

Sunday 25th June saw the first communion of Rev’d Rob Lowe. This followed his ordination at St David’s the previous day.

The service at a packed St Peter’s Church was led by Rev’d Whittock, with Rev’d Mansel-Lewis, Rev’d Ashdown and Rev’d Payne also in attendance. The service involved the combined LMA choir led by Mr Chris Hatchet, with accompaniment by Mrs Nona Thomas.

Congratulations Rob!

The Parish Church Bell Ringers

The Parish Church Bell Ringers recently took part in BBC Music Day on 15th June. The event saw tower and hand-bell ringers from the UK and around the world invited to ring out at 7PM.

The group rang Rounds and Call Changes on the back six of the eight bells in the tower.

Organisers were hoping that last year’s event which saw over two hundred towers involved could be surpassed.

Weekly practice at the Parish Church normally takes place from 7.30pm on Thursday evenings, and new members from within the Parish are encouraged to join their ‘Big Bell Ringing’. Help is currently provided by ringers from St Peter’s Church in Carmarthen. Please enquire with Joan or Chris via the email address StElliBellRingers@outlook.com, if you would like to come along to a ringing session and train to become a ringer.

Welsh Colleges Society of Change Ringers

Llanelli Parish Church was delighted to welcome representatives from the Welsh Colleges Society of Change Ringers on Saturday 8th April, as part of their annual Easter Tour.

The society rang the bells for over an hour, treating Llanelli town centre to a range of tunes.

Llanelli Parish Church has a full octave of eight bells, located within its 13th Century tower. Most of the current bells date from the 1820’s and 1840’s, with two further bells added in the 1960’s to bring the total to eight. The Parish Church bell ringers meet on a regular basis for practice, and also ring at important services and weddings.

Parish Church Clock

Following recent work the Parish Church clock is now operational again. The clock dates to approximately 1820, but has been out of action for several years. The Parish was extremely grateful when the clock face was restored through a generous private donation a few years ago, and recent cleaning and internal maintenance work has completed the task. The Parish is very grateful for the kind donation granted by Llanelli Civic Society, the additional private donations received towards the restoration costs, and for all the individual efforts to bring the town’s oldest clock back into operation.
