St Michael’s is a parish on the northern boundary of the city of Cardiff stretching from Whitchurch in the south to the Nantgarw Trading Estate in the north. The parish contains a wide variety of social backgrounds. There are two churches in the parish St Michael and All Angels in Tongwynlais and St Mary and St James in Taffs Well. There were originally three churchs but St Mary’s in Nantgarw closed in the 1960s and St James church in Taffs Well was then rededicated as St Mary and St James.
The parish was created in the 20th century by amalgamating the church in Tongwynlais, which was originally a daughter church in the Parish of Whitchurch, with the churches in Taffs Well and Nantgarw which were then in the Parish of Eglwysilan. At that time the parish was in the deanary of Caerphilly but now it is in the Llandaff deanary.
