The parish church of St John Baptist was consecretated in May, 1900. The establishment of the parish has its foundations in the Oxford Movement and St John’s can claim the privilage of being the forerunner of Anglo-Catholicism in Newport.

However, the spiritual seeds were planted some 25yrs prior to this with the start of the St John Baptist Mission in 1875. A driving force of the Mission was the initial compulsion to preach the Faith to the poor.
