A very brief biography of our Vicar

The Revd David Kellen

Born: 2nd half of the C20th – Bangor NW – his parents were there at the time

Educated: Pontypool Wern Secondary Modern School (it was approved); Abersychan Grammar Technical; St Michael’s College Llandaff 1970-73

Health Service: 1973-75

Deacon: 1975; Priest: 1976

Curacies: Mynyddislwyn: 1975-76; Risca 1977-78; Malpas: 1978-81

Incumbencies: All Saints Newport: 1981-88; St Mellons: 1988-     (also Rector of Michaelston-y-Fedw 1989-95)

Married: A girl from Risca on April ?? 1978. A day that will for ever stay in his heart. They had to move because the Vicar said that parishioners would have to call his wife “Mrs Kellen” because her status had changed. She had lived in Risca all her life.

Parochial Interests: Christian Education especially through the two Church Schools; Ministry to the Sick; The Ecumenical Movement

Hobbies: Walking – often on his own. This was taken to be a psychological defect when first interviewed for ordination training; Preserved Steam Railway Lines; Real Ales; Cooking; Television

Vocation: “I felt that I was called to be a Priest when I was 14. Realising that vocation was hard work. I am not an academic genius. I believe that God has presently called me to be Vicar of St Mellons and I think that St Mellons has a great future”.
