Mathern Open Church

Bob Dylan – still second to none even if he couldn’t sing, which I dispute. 43 years on and the speed of change has shifted up several gears – and you are meant to take it all in your stride without missing a beat. Whatever the problem, there’s a counseling service or an app for it, right?

Well, have I got a new app for you.

Mathern Church will be open on specific weekdays throughout the winter. The lights (and heating) will be on but there will be no service, no welcoming committee, no collection: just a quiet breathing-space for prayer, contemplation or a moment’s respite from the rat-race with no strings attached.

If you prefer silence to quiet background music, an unobtrusive volunteer will be somewhere around to turn the sound system off at your request. You will not be engaged in conversation unless you actively seek it.

Opening times, probably each Monday morning (10.00 – 12.00), Wednesday evening (7.00 – 8.00) and Friday afternoon (2.00 – 4.00), will be published in the church notices every week to allow for unscheduled events such as funerals.

Give it a try; it might be just what you didn’t know you were looking for. If you’re walking the dog or the baby, animals and children are equally welcome.

You will also find a Prayer Tree (no, prayer tree not pear tree, we’re not embarking on fruticulture – do keep up) in the church porch, with explanatory poster, prayer-cards and pegs.

Feel free to contact Mon on 01291 622020 or for more information or to check on opening times each week.
