Capel Coelbren is the oldest of the three church buildings in the Parish of Cwmtawe Uchaf.
There is no certainty as to the age of the building. The eastern half of the nave is judged to be Elizabethan. The building fell into disrepair during the 19th century, and was renovated in 1885, with the chancel being added in 1905 and the western half of the nave added in 1914. The present building seats approximately 120.
